    Non-Native English Speaker Information
    Graduate School requirement: English language proficiency (ELP) is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency as outlined in Graduate School Policy 3.2.

    Program Requirement: The Information School requires all Ph.D. applicants to meet the recommended English Proficiency score set by the Graduate School UW Policy 3.2. In addition, Ph.D. applicants must complete the TOEFL or IELTS exam with a speaking score meeting the UW Policy 5.2

    Non-native English speakers will indicate how they will fulfill the requirement in the application. The options are:

    • Official TOEFL scores — minimum score of 92 with speaking score of 26
      • submitted to the UW with ETS code 4854; use department code 99
    • Official IELTS scores — minimum score of 7.0 with speaking score of 7.0
      • submitted to the UW with organization code 365
    • Hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States, or hold a bachelor’s degree from an institution in Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, or the United Kingdom, where English is the medium of instruction. While enrolled at the degree-granting school, the student must be in residence on campus. (Note: A master’s degree does not satisfy this requirement.)
      • No additional documentation is required. We will use the transcript submitted with the application to verify that the requirement has been fulfilled.


    International Student Information
    Applicants who will need a visa should reference the International Applicant Information page. If admitted to the program, international students requesting an F1 or J1 visa will be required to provide financial ability documentation to the UW Graduate School.

    International applicants have the same deadline and application requirements as all other applicants.

    Graduate Student Appointments are available to qualified students regardless of citizenship. Appointments include a monthly stipend, tuition waiver and health insurance in return for approximately 20 hours of work per week.
