    Requirements and Prerequisites

    Applicants with backgrounds in materials science and engineering, chemistry, physics, or other related science or engineering disciplines are encouraged to apply.

    A minimum GPA of 3.00 is required, either overall or for the last 90 quarter credits or 60 semester credits. The GRE is not required.

    International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency, typically through a U.S. bachelor’s degree. If test scores are needed, applicants must meet the recommended minimum scores. For full details, please review the complete requirements.

    GRE Requirement: Optional/Not Required. Submitting GRE scores is not required. However, if official scores are submitted, they may be considered during the review process.
    More Information: If you've completed the GRE, your scores will be considered, but it is not a required part of the application.

    This program doesn’t offer department financial support, including Research or Teaching Assistantships. Domestic students may apply for financial aid.

    Non-Native English Speaker Information
    Graduate School requirement: English language proficiency (ELP) is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency as outlined in Graduate School Policy 3.2.

    Program requirement: If using official test scores to fulfill the requirement, the minimum scores are as follows:
    • TOEFLiBT: 92
    • Duolingo: 120
    • IELTS: 7.0
