    Requirements and Prerequisites

    Applicants with backgrounds in materials science and engineering, chemistry, physics, or related science and engineering fields are encouraged to apply.

    A minimum GPA of 3.00 is required, though competitive candidates typically have a GPA of 3.50 or higher. The GRE is not required.

    International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency, usually satisfied by earning a bachelor's or master's degree in the United States. If English language tests are required, applicants must meet the recommended scores. For full details, please refer to the complete proficiency requirements.

    Non-Native English Speaker Information
    Graduate School requirement: English language proficiency (ELP) is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency as outlined in Graduate School Policy 3.2.

    Program requirement: If using official test scores to fulfill the requirement, the minimum scores are as follows:
    • TOEFLiBT: 92
    • Duolingo: 120
    • IELTS: 7.0
