    GRE Requirements
GRE Requirement: Optional/Not Required. Submitting GRE scores is not required. However, if official scores are submitted, they may be considered during the review process.
More Information: At this time, we do not require a submission of a GRE score
    Additional Instructions
We are a dual PhD program. At this time, we do not offer a stand alone MA program. Students earn an MA as part of the PhD. In some instances, students with an existing MA may be admitted, however, this is up to the review committee. If you have questions about this, contact our GPC, Sarah Quinn at slquinn@uw.edu.

    Non-Native English Speaker Information
Graduate School requirement: English language proficiency (ELP) is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency as outlined in Graduate School Policy 3.2.

While the Sociology Department follows the guidance of the UW Graduate School regarding the English Language Proficiency (ELP) Requirement and the appointment of non-native English-speaking Teaching Assistants (TAs), for our program, you must submit a passing language proficiency test if you are a non-native speaker or your application will not move forward. The reason for this is because our main source of funding is TA appointments and graduate students must be able to interact with undergraduate students on a regular basis and have proven language skills prior to entering the program. For more information, please refer to Policy 3.2: Graduate School English Language Proficiency Requirements

    International Student Information
Applicants who will need a visa should reference the International Applicant Information page. If admitted to the program, international students requesting an F1 or J1 visa will be required to provide financial ability documentation to the UW Graduate School.

Limited funds are available through Teaching Assistantships. If applicant, TAs must meet the requirements outlined in the Graduate School Policy 5.2.
