    Requirements and Prerequisites
    Applicants to the doctoral program in Slavic Languages and Literatures must possess an M.A. or equivalent degree by the time they begin graduate studies. Ph.D. students are admitted by vote of the graduate faculty on the basis of their language skills in both their target Slavic language and English, general background in Slavic cultures, previous academic performance, research interests, and alignment of these interests with available departmental and university resources. It is essential that Ph.D. candidates review the faculty research and teaching concentrations and consider potential advisors and committee members.

    Any applicant interested in a Teaching Assistantship needs to complete the T.A. application. This form is available on the Graduate Admissions page on the departmental website, under the Funding heading.

    Non-Native English Speaker Information
    Graduate School requirement: English language proficiency (ELP) is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency as outlined in Graduate School Policy 3.2.

    Program information: If you are using an official English Language Test score to meet the requirement for English language proficiency, please self-report your score on the Self-Reported Test Scores page, in addition to officially submitting your scores electronically to the University of Washington.

    International Student Information
    Applicants who will need a visa should reference the International Applicant Information page. If admitted to the program, international students requesting an F1 or J1 visa will be required to provide financial ability documentation to the UW Graduate School.

    The preferred application deadline is November 1, however applications will be accepted until December 15.
