    Requirements and Prerequisites
    REVIEW APPLICATION GUIDELINES
    GRE Requirements
GRE Requirement: Optional/Not Required. Submitting GRE scores is not required. However, if official scores are submitted, they may be considered during the review process.
More Information: The GRE has been waived for all of our MA programs except for these 3: China, Japan, and Korea Studies (for these programs, it’s strongly recommended, as it is for the PhD program). The admission committees of these 4 graduate programs like to have the GRE as an extra data point for their admission decisions but it's not a deciding factor as they have other more relevant documents to review. In addition, applicants could request it to be waived under special circumstances (financial constraints, applicant lives far away from nearest test location, medical issues, etc.)
    Additional Instructions
If you have not taken the GRE, you should take the exam no later than December 14th in order for the scores to be considered with your application.

    Non-Native English Speaker Information
Graduate School requirement: English language proficiency (ELP) is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency as outlined in Graduate School Policy 3.2.

Program requirement: If submitting official test scores, the TOEFL or IELTS exam should be taken by December 20th.

    International Student Information
Applicants who will need a visa should reference the International Applicant Information page. If admitted to the program, international students requesting an F1 or J1 visa will be required to provide financial ability documentation to the UW Graduate School.
