    Requirements and Prerequisites
    • A minimum 3.0 grade-point-average on a 4-point scale (or equivalent measures of performance if a graduate of an institution with no grading system) for those credits earned at the institution awarding the bachelor’s degree OR at least a 3.0 grade-point-average (on a 4-point scale) for the last 90 graded quarter credits or 60 graded semester credits. For more information, please refer to Policy 3.1 Graduate Admissions.
    • 3.5 GPA recommended for math courses.
    • 5 full-year courses (30 semester or 45 quarter credits) in math beyond precalculus; familiarity with advanced calculus (one variable & multivariable), differential equations, and linear algebra; rigorous advanced undergraduate course in abstract algebra or real analysis.

    GRE Requirement: Not Considered. GRE scores are not required and, if submitted, will not be considered during the admissions decision process.
    Additional Instructions
    Math is primarily a PhD program and we do not provide any funding support for master's students.  Read more at our website for additional information.

    If you are applying to the MS Math while concurrently enrolled in another graduate program at UW, you should submit one letter of recommendation which should come from your thesis/dissertation faculty advisor or the faculty graduate program director/coordinator.  Their letter should indicate their support for your concurrent degree.  If you are not a current UW student, please submit 3 letters of recommendation.

    Non-Native English Speaker Information
    Graduate School requirement: English language proficiency (ELP) is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency as outlined in Graduate School Policy 3.2.

    Program requirement: Competitive applicants will submit an official TOEFL score, even if you have a degree from an accredited U.S. institution.

    International Student Information
    Applicants who will need a visa should reference the International Applicant Information page. If admitted to the program, international students requesting an F-1 or J-1 visa will be required to provide financial ability documentation to the UW Graduate School.
