    Applications for candidates wishing to be considered for Teaching Assistantships must be submitted by January 15. International applicants are encouraged to begin the process as early as possible to facilitate visa processing. General application deadline for domestic applicants is July 1, but there is no departmental funding available at that time.

    Requirements and Prerequisites
    Applicants to the MA program in German Studies should have fulfilled requirements equivalent to those for the Bachelor of Arts degree in German Studies at the University of Washington. These requirements include advanced proficiency in the German language and knowledge of the modern periods of German literature and civilization.

    GRE Requirement: Other. GRE scores are not required for the admissions review process.

    Non-Native English Speaker Information
    Graduate School requirement: English language proficiency (ELP) is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency as outlined in Graduate School Policy 3.2.

    Program recommendation: If submitting official test scores to fulfill the English language proficiency requirements, applicants should register to the test by October, if possible. 

    International Student Information
    Applicants who will need a visa should reference the International Applicant Information page. If admitted to the program, international students requesting an F-1 or J-1 visa will be required to provide financial ability documentation to the UW Graduate School.
