    Requirements and Prerequisites
    In addition to minimum Graduate School requirements, prospective graduate students should have a strong preparation in Latin and Greek, preferably a full undergraduate major. Although the MA may be attained with work in only one language, doctoral students should be prepared to work in both Latin and Greek. For further information, visit the departmental website.
    Additional Instructions
    Please note that the Department of Classics does not require, nor are we able to consider, writing samples submitted with applications to our graduate program.

    Non-Native English Speaker Information
    Graduate School requirement: English language proficiency (ELP) is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency as outlined in Graduate School Policy 3.2.

    Program requirement: Minimum TOEFL: 500, Minimum TOEFLC: 173. Those with scores between 500 and 580 will be required to fulfill an ESL requirement. Minimum TSE: 55. minimum score required for Teaching Assistantship.

    International Student Information
    Applicants who will need a visa should reference the International Applicant Information page. If admitted to the program, international students requesting an F-1 or J-1 visa will be required to provide financial ability documentation to the UW Graduate School.

    Qualified applicants are eligible to compete for funding.
