    Requirements and Prerequisites
Applicants are required to have at least a BA/BS degree. It is recommended that applicants complete an undergraduate program appropriate for graduate work in anthropology, but an undergraduate degree in anthropology is not required. In the review of an application, course work in the following areas is considered especially desirable as preparatory for advanced studies: biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, archaeology, biology and zoology, mathematics, and statistics. Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to submit GRE's.

Applicants should consider looking through the faculty page to determine whose research most aligns with your fields of interest. Faculty members serve as graduate student advisors so, prospective applicants should consider contacting faculty directly to see if they are accepting new graduate students. Please read through the PhD in Anthropology: Biological Anthropology page and Anthropology’s Graduate Admissions Frequently Asked Questions before completing an application to the program.

If you are applying to our MPH/PhD program fill out the Concurrent Application questions in the Program Selection section of this application.

    Self-Reported Test Scores
Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to submit GRE's.

    Letters of Recommendation
We require three letters of recommendation. The letters can come from anyone who is familiar with your interests and goals and should emphasize your promise for success in graduate study. Most applicants share their statements of purpose and personal statements with potential letter writers, who are typically past professors or work supervisors. Letters from family members or close personal friends are discouraged. Please visit The Graduate School’s guide on Letters of Recommendation.

    Transcripts
We require transcripts from academic institutions you have attended. English Language Learners may have to submit test scores.
    Additional Instructions
Students whose interests are primarily in the sociocultural anthropology or archaeology programs, and who plan to work primarily with faculty in those programs, should not apply here with the hope that they can transition into those programs, as each is separately administered; these applications will only be considered for admission to the biological anthropology program. Applicants may apply for and be admitted for autumn quarter only. Please contact the Graduate Program Office at agp-advisor@uw.edu if you have any questions.

Application fee waivers are available. Please review the Graduate School website for details.

    Non-Native English Speaker Information
Graduate School requirement: English language proficiency (ELP) is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency as outlined in Graduate School Policy 3.2.

    International Student Information
Applicants who will need a visa should reference the International Applicant Information page. If admitted to the program, international students requesting an F-1 or J-1 visa will be required to provide financial ability documentation to the UW Graduate School.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to seek outside funding.
