    Requirements and Prerequisites

    A minimum 3.0 grade-point-average on a 4-point scale (or equivalent measures of performance if a graduate of an institution with no grading system) for those credits earned at the institution awarding the bachelor’s degree OR at least a 3.0 grade-point-average (on a 4-point scale) for the last 90 graded quarter credits or 60 graded semester credits.     Additional Instructions

    Program Track
    • Applicants holding a Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture or architecture may apply to the MLA II (2-year) track.
    • Applicants holding a Bachelor's degree in another discipline should apply to the MLA I (3-year) track.

    Test Scores:

    • GRE test scores are NOT required nor reviewed for the MLA degree program.
    • The only self-reported test scores that the MLA degree program will consider are English language proficiency tests (Duolingo, IELTS, or TOEFL).
    Concurrent MLA/MArch or MLA/MUP Applicants
    If you are applying for either the concurrent MLA/MArch or MLA/MUP degree program, you must complete separate applications for both programs. You may use the same letters of recommendation for both programs, however, we recommend that you inform those writing letters for you that you are applying to both degrees so their letter can address both programs.

    Non-Native English Speaker Information
    Graduate School requirement: English language proficiency (ELP) is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency as outlined in Graduate School Policy 3.2.

    Program requirement: Test scores indicating English proficiency is required for applicants from countries in which the official language is not English.

    Applicants should also self-report their test scores.

    Minimum test scores for the MLA degree program:
    • TOEFL iBT + TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition: min. score = 92
    • IELTS: min. score = 7.0  
    • Duolingo English Test: min. score = 120


    International Student Information
    Applicants who will need a visa should reference the International Applicant Information page. If admitted to the program, international students requesting an F-1 or J-1 visa will be required to provide financial ability documentation to the UW Graduate School.

    Funding during the first year of study is typically not available.
