    NOTE: This program is being discontinued. Please apply to one of our three new programs:

    Please note these are soft deadlines, and final application materials (recommendations, test scores) will be accepted up to an approximate 7-day window after the 1/2/24 deadline. We strongly recommend international application meet the 12/1/23 deadline, but applications will be reviewed as long as all materials are received and the application is entirely complete within 7 days of the 1/2/24 deadline.

    Requirements and Prerequisites
    Master's degree in a discipline that is one of the College of Built Environments' central areas (architectural studies, construction management, landscape architecture, urban design & planning, real estate) or a normal area of expertise in the College's activities (engineering, energy studies, geography, environmental psychology, CAD or GIS, etc.), or that is congruent with one of the 3 fundamental areas integrated into the Built Environment program (sustainable systems & prototypes, technology and project design/delivery, or history, theory & representation studies).

    Non-Native English Speaker Information
    Graduate School requirement: English language proficiency (ELP) is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency as outlined in Graduate School Policy 3.2.

    Program requirement: Please note that official test results provided electronically by the testing agency or proof of English-language proficiency as per the policy should be received by the university by December 1 and must be received by January 3. Late applications can be accepted as long as materials are entirely complete within of 7-day window of the domestic application deadline of January 3rd. We strongly encourage international applicants to complete their applications by the December 1st deadline in case there are issues that must be resolved.

    Applicants who will need a visa should reference the International Applicant Information page. If admitted to the program, international students requesting an F-1 or J-1 visa will be required to provide financial ability documentation to the UW Graduate School.

    International students are eligible for our first-year fellowships and for possible RA/TA positions.
